Bamahenge………..No, I did not make this up

My son and I are always up for looking for interesting……an odd….forms of artistic expression.  We see it as an adventure, and it usually is free.

Last September, my family was visiting my in-laws for the week near Gulf Shores, Alabama.  I was sitting on the couch looking for something to do while my mother- in- law worked online, and found BAMAHENGE.  An art teacher’s dream!

Bamahenge is a full-scale fiberglass replica Stonehenge located on the grounds of Barber Marina near the small town of Elberta, Alabama. It was designed and built by the artist, Mark Cline, for the owner of a marina owner, George Barber. George Barber is also the owner of Barber Motorsports.

George Barber had originally asked Mark Cline to make and install seven life six dinosaurs for decoration on his private property.  One of the dinosaurs was damaged after a hurricane.   Mr. Cline was called in to make repairs on the fiberglass dinosaur.  While working, he was approached by  George Barber to build a life-size Stonehenge replica at his Vintage Motor Sports Museum near Birmingham, Alabama.  In 2012, when Mark Cline began work on the Stonehenge replica, Barber decided to relocate four dinosaurs to the woods on the grounds of his marina, and Stonehenge was installed there as well.

Bamahenge is a full size replica made of fiberglass “stones.”  It measures 21 feet tall and 104 feet across.  Like Stonehenge, it is aligned to the summer solstice.  The stones are not an exact replica as a mold was used to fabricate four stone sizes.  The stones were assembled in Virginia and transported to Alabama on flat-bed trailer.

The images below give am indication of the size of Stonehenge and the arrangement. My son is only 50″ tall.

It was a fun, but hot trip.  I suggest you take a lot of water.  Stonehenge was easy to find along the road to Barber Marina, but the dinosaurs are often hidden in the woods in the pine trees.
